FarmFoody.org

FarmFoody.org, a Web site that lets locals and small farmers link up and share information from harvest updates to family recipes. This website, less than a year old, is the brainchild of 68-year-old Virginia farmer Tom Davenport, who raises beef and peaches on the Fauquier County farm where he grew up. Nearly 750 farms and individuals have signed on so far.
A goal of Farmfoody.org was to make posting farm information much easier. The site will be especially useful to Pick Your Own farms and orchards, to vineyards, CSAs, Farmers Markets, hay sellers, and others making direct sales to their customers (foodies). A farm can post a bulletin (you can choose to run it for three days, a week, a month) and instantly all your farm’s friends get an email saying your peaches are ready or you have strawberries to pick.
The site showcases a featured farm, links to an Eat Well Guide, provides a forum for local growers and buyers to interact and arrange meetings, offers recipes, and allows farmers to tag members with foods that they grow and members to tag farmers with foods that they want.
The site also includes “Frequently Asked Questions” so the farmer won’t have to spend hours on the phone explaining his programs.
To get the site started, Tom and Steve seeded it with Virginia PYO farms, farmers’ markets, and vineyards.
