On 29 July 2008, the final version KDE 4.1 was release. Along with Gnome, KDE is one of the two most widely used desktop environments for Linux and Unix systems. With the KDE 4 series, developers shifted the system from the Qt 3 application-development framework to Qt 4, while rebuilding the desktop environment from scratch. The KDE Community released KDE 4.1.0. and this release is the second feature release of the KDE 4 series, sporting new applications and newly developed features on top of the Pillars of KDE4.

The new features and applications such as:
- Dolphin, the file manager which supports now tabs
- the panel configuration, Plasma, has been extended, (everything has been improved: the appearance, performance, more easy and flexible for use…)
- KDE-PIM, the management suite of personal data, is integrated (KMail as mail client, KOrganizer as planning component, etc.)
- Dragon Player, a new video player
- KDE applications can be written using Python and Ruby (it concerns more developers)
- Etc. (more)

Now, the operating system OpenSolaris is well supported by KDE 4.1, despite a few bugs. Some applications may also run under Windows, and currently KDE is preparing their arrival on MAC OS X.
