Microsoft Edison: Green Your PC

  Microsoft Edison: Green Your PC

Many power management software are offered, there’s clearly room for improvement, particularly with rising energy prices and environmental awareness.  Microsoft have got together with a start-up called Verdiem to produce Edison, a free software tool to help save energy usage on PCs. Verdiem is a new monitoring application for enabling eco-conscious consumers around the world to proactively control PC energy consumption as well as cut down on household emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2).

PCs can consume as much as 10 percent of a home’s energy bill and give off as much carbon dioxide as a family car. Even when a PC’s screen saver kicks on, the machine can still consume between 100 watts and 250 watts. Klustner explained. “By finding ways to embed offsets in our daily life — even something as simple as downloading software — we will create permanent reductions in energy use and have a huge impact on our environment and resource sustainability.”

Features include:

  • Scheduling. Identify work and non-work schedules to optimize power schemes based on when your PC is in use or on standby.
  • Settings. Choose from among several options for power savings and settings.
  • Estimated Savings Reports. Find information that shows how PC power settings correlate to money, kWh and CO2 savings.
  • Intuitive User Interface. Drag easy-to-use sliding bars to choose settings and instantly see the power and monetary savings. Clearly marked tabs make the interface easy to navigate.
  • The software is available for free download from Microsoft.
