Playdar.org: music content resolver
Playdar offers us a chance to search for music by artist and song as well as access the files we already own. With Playdar, users allow the tool to scan their desktops, networked machines and music subscription profiles before streaming a Web-based alternative.
Playdar runs as a web service using standard web protocols for communicating with applications. When Playdar receives a request to resolve a track it runs through a list of prioritized content resolvers looking for the track. First it checks your local machine, then your local network.
You can write plugins for Playdar to enable it to search additional sources. It’s fast. If a matching song is within reach, it can start playing in less than a second. This is called Content Resolution. Playdar is a “Content Resolver”- it will take metadata (artist, album, track names) and resolve them to a location of a matching music file. This might be on your disk, or over the network – regardless, sources are always presented as URLs that point to your local machine.

Playdar enables a number of new listening modes:
* Listen to my music anywhere With Playdar you can listen to entire music collection onto every computer no matter what computer you are using
* Save money for music streamers – Playdar ensures that if you’re a music startup company and your users already own a track, you don’t have to pay for them to enjoy it again and again.
* Share playlists and mixtapes – Once up and running, Playdar gives 3rd party web sites the ability to organize, search and listen to your music collection (even if that collection is stored across multiple machines) in a playlist (perhaps in a XSPF format)
* Pool the music – With Playdar, all the music on all of the computers running Playdar on your local lan can be available for you to search and play without any of the iTunes awkwardness.
* Add Play buttons to songs on web pages -It is possibly to embed Playdar functionality in any web page, then you add a ‘play’ button to the song that would use Playdar to find the best way to play the song.
